The Heart of a Dragon

It was said that once a Tarzapian dragon reached a certain point in its karmic life cycle, it would evolve into something else. Not necessarily a higher form of life, just something else.

Although Deignian had only been a few years older than Ardent when he left Tarzap, he knew a lot more about it than she. He was free to travel there whenever he pleased. Ardent never knew or understood why she was bound to this planet.

Ardent had spent centuries studying other planets, other worlds. She still knew very little about her own world.

She understood that, unlike the souls on Earth, Tarzapian souls reincarnated once they died but they always came back baring the same identity, the same body. There were always differences, but they were minor. It was very possible to die one day and the next be reborn and continue on with your life where you left off.

Ardent, however, was different. She had, ofcourse, died a number of times by accident; one such time was when she discovered that she was deadly allergic to the water on Earth. She had quickly reincarnated into a seven foot tall Tarzapian male with fair skin and long black hair. This came as quite a surprise.

Deignian never seemed surprised by this. "You're different than other Tarzapians and you'll understand when you're older." And that was that. He never told her what made her so different.

It would be a long time before Ardent fully understood just how different and special she was.

"Deignian! Deignian! Come to me; heed my call!" Ardent screamed out into the night. It was still cold, wet and very dark as she ran through the castle grounds headed towards the stables.

"Umph," Ardent stopped abruptly as Deignian appeared before her.

"What is it, si-" Deignian put his hand over his mouth before he slipped. "I mean, err, I was nearly half way to Tarzap when I heard you call."

Ardent looked at her friend with a quizical glance but let it slide.

"He's back. He's back and he continued on placing his hand on my head. I felt it but once again there was no one there when I looked. Just that darn old shadow."

"I wouldn't worry about it too much," Deignian said with a sigh. "If he meant you harm you would have been dead ages ago."

"Ardent," a whisper entered her ear slowly.

"Ack!" she jumped back at the voice. "Did you hear that?"

"Hear what?"

"I'll take that as a no."
